Summary: Around the time that the Hudson River was discovered, there were several reports of strange creatures coming down from the surrounding countryside and causing mischief in area settlements. After months of investigation, the only evidence of these creatures were mysterious piles of buttons, carrots and corn cob pipes found after the winter thaw. When these settlers realized that the arrival of these elusive beings coincided with healthy citizens and abundant crops, they began to build snowmen on their land, sort of inverted scarecrows if you will, with an intent to attract rather than repel the target creatures. This tradition survives to this day, and remains popular with kids and adults throughout the northern states and wherever else it shows.
