Summary: Cumbia is a Colombian folk dance that has its origins in the cultural fusion of American Indians and African slaves that were settled in northern Colombia. It follows a 4/4 rhythm structure with strong drum beats and percussion most likely from the African influence. Cumbia began as a courtship dance that was practiced primarily among the slave population, but has gained in popularity since the 1990s and is frequently danced in several Latin American countries during parties and festivals.

About the Expert

Her natural knack for hip hop led her to spend four years with local dance group, “In Effect,” before her love for salsa brought her to Los Angeles in the year 2000. Her hard work and dedication has paid off with performances in television, films, festivals, and professional competitions. Most recently, you can see her featured in the new CBS series “CANE.” She danced 4 years with world renowned “Salsabor Y Cache” where she got her first international teaching experience, 5 years with “Salsa In The Mix” where she came to choreograph and co-direct, and 5 years with “Sunflower dancers” where she embraced more diverse dance styles such as Persian, Israeli, and Brazilian Samba.
