Summary: Fencing, or the art of armed combat involving strikes such as cutting and stabbing, is known as the art of swordsmanship. It has developed into a competitive sport and is an official Olympic sport. Protective fencing gear consists of masks, gloves, breeches and plastron. Typically made of tough cotton and nylon and Kevlar, the full-body padding is very protective and cannot usually be punctured. This form of competitive swordsmanship has been in practice for centuries. Today, thanks to modern technology, the fencers wear electronic wires for scoring hits or strikes.

There are different types of swords used in fencing including an epee, a foil, and a sabre. In this series of video clips, you’ll learn more about sabre fencing. About the Expert

Expert: Nickolay Logatchov began his Sabre Fencing career in 1974 at the age of 10 in Minsk, Belarus. He was a two time Belarus National Sabre Champion, a two time Soviet Union Sabre Champion, as well as the Captain of the Belarusian National Fencing Team. Coach Logatchov acquired a Masters in Sport Education in Minsk University. In 1998, he immigrated to the USA and began his career as a fencing coach. In 1999, he co-founded Colorado’s first sabre fencing school, Colorado Fencing Academy. Under his coaching, students earn positions on the US National Fencing Team, national and international medals and points, as well as scholarships to various universities and military academies. As well as coaching, Maestro Logatchov also continues to compete in the Olympic sport of fencing at the National and International levels. Learn more at www.cofacademy.org.

Sharol Pestotnik began fencing at a local recreational center in 1996 at the age of 40. In 1999 she co-founded Colorado Fencing Academy of which she is a member.
