Summary: Though many people cannot stand snakes, there are others who love the cold blooded, slithering creatures and actually keep them as pets. In fact, snakes enjoy being held due to the warmth they gain from human skin. This attribute accompanied with snakes' innate curiosity make snakes great pets to carry around the home or even in public. However, when you are not carrying around your pet snake it must be kept in a snake cage to protect it from other animals, the elements, and to keep it out of trouble. If you are new to owning a pet snake and need some tips for setting up a snake cage, you can learn how from one of our experts.

In this free video series, learn from snake expert Johan Svahnström how to set up a snake cage for your pet snake. Johan will teach you how to choose a snake cage, where to place a snake cage in your home, what type of substrate to put in your pet snake cage, and how to choose snake cage furniture. Find out how to choose a lid for a snake cage, how to control the humidity in a snake cage, how to choose a heat source for a snake cage, and how to introduce a snake to a snake cage.

About the Expert

Expert: Johan Svahnstrm has been working with reptiles and amphibians for over 20 years.
Johan was born in Sweden, and began at an early age, to take on the often difficult task of keeping and breeding reptiles in the frigid climate of Scandinavia.
He started as a young child keeping and breeding Red Tail Boas and Rainbow Boas. Later, when he moved to Florida he ventured into more difficult reptile species such as exotic geckos and skinks. Johan paid his way through college by breeding and selling a variety of reptiles and amphibians. He was a common sight at the many reptile conventions around the U.S. at the time. At that time he specialized in a variety of Day Geckos and Leopard Geckos. He also successfully bred Kingsnakes, Milksnakes, Rosy Boas and Bullsnakes.
After Johan earned his teaching degree he has been using his reptile knowledge in the classroom. There are always a few snakes and lizards in Johan’s class.
