Summary: The Jacuzzi is today synonymous with luxurious spas and high-end whirlpool baths. Many other companies manufacture hot tubs and stand-alone whirlpools, but the Jacuzzi name endures as the prestigious originators of both therapeutic and sybaritic home spas. Seven Italian brothers moved to California at the turn of the century and began picking oranges to fund their inventions of jet propellers and water pumps. In the 1950s, the brothers developed a portable water pump that could be placed in bathtubs to soothe people with crippling or painful ailments. By 1967, after family tragedies and changes in trajectory, the brothers patented a stand-alone spa and gained celebrity endorsement. Thus the brand was born.
