Summary: A panic attack is described as an intense, short period of anxiety that causes chest tightness, shortness of breath and sometimes a loss of consciousness. These panic attacks, or anxiety attacks, can be triggered by traumatic experiences, stress, genetics and can sometimes have no apparent cause. Although panic attacks are not serious medical emergencies in and of themselves, because they can be unexpected, the circumstance and context can be dangerous.

In this free mental health video series, watch as expert Ben Brennan teaches how to alleviate panic attacks. Learn different coping mechanisms for anxiety, how to prevent panic attacks, how to help others when they are having anxiety attacks, how to deal with stress, and how to do different breathing exercises to help with panic attacks. About the Expert

Expert: Ben Brennan has earned a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Counseling, and also has a BA in Psychology. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern in the state of Texas. His career thus far has found him providing individual and group therapy to children and adults, as well as working for and supervising a program to provide suicide assessments and crisis intervention for Emergency Rooms and for individuals in his local community.
