Summary: The electric doorbell is believed to have been invented in 1831 by Joseph Henry. The first doorbells, of course were not electric. Shop bells and antique doorbells were hung above door frames and were signals that someone had already opened the door. Doorbells today are electronically wired systems including a button on the outer door frame and a signaling device (chimes or buzzer) inside the home or building. There are also wireless systems available that are growing in popularity. For the hearing impaired, there are systems available that are wired to visual signaling devices such as light bulbs.

Expert: Chad Smith, a Journeyman Wireman, has always had a knack for electrical work. Even at a young age, he took apart small appliances to see how they work. In his mid-20s, he saw an ad in the Red Oak, Iowa, newspaper for an electrician’s helper, and so the story begins. Within a month, he had a company truck and was given his first major job; re-wiring a window manufacturing company. In 1993 he was introduced to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He passed the Journeyman Wireman exam, a feat most electricians take five years to accomplish, after being in the trade only for a little over a year. He moved to California in 1998 and quickly became certified for the state. He now practices his trade in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
