Summary: Thailand lies snuggled up near Laos, Cambodia and the Andaman Sea, just north of Malaysia. The culture is an exotic blend of South and East Asian traditions. This nation is the only one in Southeast Asia that hasn't been colonized by European invaders, thanks to strong rulers and skillful sacrifices of territory to settlers. Before 1939, the country was called Siam but changed its official title to Ratcha Anachak Thai, The Kingdom of Thailand, shortly after converting to a constitutional monarchy in the years before World War II. In the last few years Thailand has seen dire shifts in its political climate, rehabilitating itself after a corrupt government was overthrown by a military coup d’etat in 2006. For some years before these events, the country had reasonably successful democratic elections.
