Summary: Sight singing refers to the ability to sight read the notes of a piece of music while singing them. The skill to sing an unfamiliar song or musical number is crucial to circumstances which require a quick turnaround, such as auditions for musicals and dramas as well as pieces for commercials, which are often done in one take. This skill is an important way for beginning singers to perfect their abilities for the later stages of their musical education. Many musical programs base their admissions on a potential student's sight reading performance. This skill depends on a basic familiarity with notes, scales and time signatures, and relies a great deal on short-term musical memory.

In this series of free voice lesson videos, our award-winning vocal coach tells you how to learn notes and hand signs for sight singing and demonstrates how to sing in specific intervals. She also discusses singing in solfege and in different time signatures. Learn these easy-to-follow lessons and you will be able to sing like a pro.
