Summary: Bagpipes are a musical wind instrument that has a set of enclosed reeds. The different parts of the bagpipes are the air supply or blowpipe, a bag, a chanter and a drone. The pipes are a common instrument in Irish and Scottish cultures, but are believed to have been created in the area that is present-day Iran. There are dozens of different types of bagpipes including an electric version. Bagpipes are symbolic of many types of festivities including St. Patrick’s Day, funerals and weddings. The popularity of the bagpipe seems to have encompassed the entire world, and today they are changing accordingly.

About the Expert

Mike Oberst is a professional musician based out of Cincinnati, Ohio. He is proficient in nearly ten different instruments, including the bagpipes, mandolin, guitar, and accordion just to name a few. Mike played bagpipes professionally for five year with Caledonian pipe band, a traditional Scottish group that played at festivals and gatherings throughout the Ohio Valley. Mike now spends his time playing mandolin with his band the Blue Rock Boys across the mid-west.
