Summary: The term “curry” is an English invention, borrowed from a similar-sounding word in India and brought back to Europe in the 18th century. Traditionally, a curry is any dish accompanying rice. Most curry in the West is characterized by “curry powder,” a combination of spices developed by the British, who hoped to bring the tastes of India home, and heavy in turmeric. India, Trinidad, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Jamaica, Grenada, the Caribbean, and cultures throughout Southeast Asia and Africa all have unique variations on curry dishes. Curry styles have a wide variety within each country as well. For example, curries in India vary widely from region to region, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayali cuisines all adding unique ingredients and spices to the dish.
