Summary: The automobile—a machine that means so much to so many—is a complex system built on the designs and ideas of men and women who are long gone from the world. And while we’ve enjoyed traveling the back roads of childhood, the streets of adolescence and the highways of adulthood, the car has remained a reliable means of transportation, as well as a vehicle that embodies the hopes and dreams of reaching exciting new destinations, or returning home.
Cars, as with everything else in this world, deteriorate with use or non-use over time. In this free auto-restoration video series, our expert, Doug Jenkins, will not only show you how to maintain your car, but also how to completely restore and renew an old trunk. You'll learn how to cut out and remove old parts; prepare, weld and install new parts; and grind, patch and paint the final product, as an old trunk becomes new before your eyes.
About the Expert
Doug got his start in fixing, customizing, racing, selling, restoring when young. Real young. His grandpa put two 6x8 garden sheds in the backyard of the apartment when Doug was in 4th grade and he went to work fixing bicycles for anyone who would pay. By sixth grade Doug had bought non-running motorcycles and fixed, and wrecked, them.
First car, not running, by 14, fixed and sold for a profit…20 more by the time he graduated from high school, and lots more to pay his and his wife’s way through college. Two seasons on commercial fishing boats, a summer in the Prudhoe Bay oilfields of Alaska, and two summers farming filled up some time, too. After college he moved back to his home state of Alaska, and had a ball. For the first 6 years he operated a wood shop, building cabinets and furniture in the winter, log and frame homes during the summer. The next good activity was logging. Doug and a couple of buddies had a logging and sawmill operation for local and export use.
