Summary: The oldest recorded instance of the harp dates back to ancient Mesopotamia, though there are many harp-like instruments recognized throughout history. The lyre, known primarily from the Hebrew Bible, is a similar instrument, also having its strings parallel to its soundboard. The same Bible records that a young David soothed the terrors of King Saul by playing harp songs. Perhaps this was because to play harp music is a delicate and difficult venture, requiring use of all fingers except for the pinky, which is generally considered too small to reach the strings effectively.

In these free beginner music lessons on video, learn to play harp just like David did. Well… perhaps similar in some ways.
