Summary: Music has always been a part of the human experience. This being the case, we have devised ways to write it, read it and, of course, play it. We have developed terms for every musical scenario that might occur, and formalized these terms into a musical theory. Things like minor and major, chords and intervals are all great examples of the way we like to organize things as a species. Yet, improvisation is a great example of the speed at which our brains work. Very popular among jazz players, improvisation is a great tool to test your knowledge of the instrument—as well as let go of some of the rules to allow for more creative expression.

In these free jazz piano lessons on video, our expert pianist, Ryan Larson, shows us not only how to improve our freestyle skills, but also how to read and write music on paper—since you are only able to improvise with as much as you know. Lessons include how to play 5th chords, how to do chord progressions in the key of F major, how to use sharps, flats and intervals, how to play bass lines, how to change chord voicings, and how to compose a song of your own.

About the Expert

Expert: Ryan Larson is a young jazz composer whose teaching technique focuses on the basics of music theory in all twelve keys. When applying his 12 key technique to understanding the logic behind reading and improvising over the harmonic series, you find that you can learn every basic chord just by running one song through all twelve keys.
