Summary: Guns are modern explosives-class weapons that shoot projectiles at very high velocities. Simple enough, right? Yet, if we remove the culture vacuum and take a look at the influence firearms have in modern society, we see guns are used as talismans of power, complicated machines that represent safety, protection, revenge, anger, freedom, fear, authority, or gender identity—and perhaps a host of other undiscovered connotations.
Since the first handguns were unveiled in the 19th century, advances in technology have fed man’s desire for continuous design and functionality upgrades. New generations of firearms have become easier to load, smaller, and more powerful. For example, semi-automatic handguns were developed to allow for a point and shoot experience, allowing as many bullets as possible to be fired in succession, eliminating the necessity for loading each cartridge into the chamber before taking another shot.
Though gun use and ownership is often a topic of much controversy, guns are inanimate objects, devoid of decision-making abilities or culpable intentions. In the right hands, a weapon can save or destroy. Praise or blame is ultimately to be laid on the heads of the men and women who use firearms to protect…or to harm.
