Summary: The 18th Century was something of a golden age for the chair. As manners became less formal after the reign of Louis XIV, chair design changed from a more formal, upright posture to one which allowed the weary aristocrat to recline in leisure. As neoclassical designs became popular in Paris, the armchair in America was undergoing a transformation as well. Many New England furniture makers were influenced by the designs of Queen Anne, Windsor and Chippendale styles, and many created unique variations, like rocking chairs and writing chairs with often included drawers.

In this free video guide to collecting antique chairs you'll learn what to look for when shopping for 18th century collectible armchairs. Furniture expert Sue Shea shows you the characteristics of many chair designs, including banister back chairs, slat back chairs, Queen Anne side chairs, arm brace back Windsor chairs, comb back chairs, pigeon hole chairs, Windsor-Sheraton chairs and rockers. She offers tips on evaluating the condition of these antiques, how to examine the seat for wear, for example, where to buy 18th century chairs, and how much you should expect to pay for a collectible piece.
