Summary: Boer goats were first bred in South Africa during the early 1900s. They were bead for meat rather than for milk, from a combination of indigenous African goats with European and Indian goats. Their population has grown rapidly, due in part to their resistance to disease and ability to thrive in hot, arid areas not conducive to raising less hearty animals. They also have high fertility rates and grow rapidly. A regular on the livestock show circuit, they are distinguished by their long, flappy ears.

Our expert on raising award-winning goats tells you what characteristics make a prize boer goat. He discusses how to gauge these qualities in deciding whether or not to purchase a goat for competition. He also includes tips on how to wash and clip them as well as how to handle your goat to impress the judges.
