Summary: Woodworking tools have played a major role in the development of the human species since Neanderthal times. Whether you're shaping wood with stone and bone or an electric random orbit sander, to get the job done quickly and skillfully one must use the right tool for the right project. Power sanders are used to smooth wood in the same manner as sandpaper, only much faster and without completely wearing out your arms. The hand-held random orbit sander first appeared on the market in the 1990s, replacing the belt sander as the tool of choice for sanding jobs. It doesn't leave swirl marks on the surface, and most models have a vacuum bag to collect dust.
