Summary: Irish Flutes are simple system, cone bore flutes that are generally of wooden construction; however, they are sometimes made of composite materials. The wooden design and cone bore create a sound rich in overtones, perfect for traditional Irish music. The shape of the Irish Flute is cylindrical with a taper from the embouchure to the foot and open finger holes along the body of the flute. The open finger hole design allows the flute player to employ Irish Flute musical ornaments such as cutting, rolling, and the cran. Expert: Primarily playing Irish style wooden flute, but also known for his performances on the Breton bombard, oboe, sax, and whistle he has been making people dance to his music for more than two decades. David switched to playing traditional dance music from Bach and Stravinsky on oboe (music which he still adores) after developing a passion for the traditional New England dance- contra dancing. The love of music and dance infuses all of David’s many activities which might include performing with the well known bands Swallowtail and Wild Asparagus as well as teaching music at various music and dance camps or at home in Massachusets.
