Summary: For parents with the time and inclination, home schooling can be a very rewarding experience. Your child learns what you think they should know, with you there every step of the way to monitor their progress. The internet has contributed greatly to the potential of a child to become skilled in areas which their parents may not feel qualified to teach them. And many resources, internet and otherwise, are available to help provide a well-rounded curriculum in the comfort and security of your own home. But the choice to home school involves a great deal of responsibility for both parent and child. In some cases, the child may be better off attending a public school in spite of the best efforts of the parents. You may think you want your kid to be just like you, but crotchety cynicism might not suit a ten-year-old.

Expert Village’s Terry Neven talks about several aspects of the homeschooling experience in this series of free home education videos. What are the pros and cons of homeschooling? How does home schooling compare to the educational experience of public schools? Will your child be able to get into a good college if they are homeschooled? In addition to answering these common questions, Neven takes you behind the scenes to address issues concerning the basic operation of a home school, such as how to keep track of grades and how to create a transcript for college admission.

Expert: Terry Neven, founder and principal of Sunland Christian School, began home schooling in 1981. He started SCS in 1986 with 24 students; today the school serves more than 3000 families and continues to grow. After 17 years of pastoring, Neven began ministering full time to home school families in 1993. He is the executive director of both the California Home Educator's Legal Defense (CHELD) and the National Independent Study Accreditation Council (NISAC).
