Parks in Melbourne, Florida

Parks in Melbourne, Florida offer boating, skiing, picnicking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and swimming.

We have a very good county park system. There are at least two dozen parks between the cities and the counties. A lot of them are on the water, so they offer ramps for boating and skiing and lots of shaded benches for picnicking. We only have about six parks that offer hiking trails. We don't have bike trails. People bike on the roads. I'd say it's a moderately friendly biker town. There is a lot of traffic, so I wouldn't bike on a major highway, but I've seen some do it. I think most of the bed and breakfasts rent bikes, but I don't know if any rental companies have them.

We are very developed, so there's not a lot of pristine native vegetation left. Turkey Creek Sanctuary and Erna Nixon Park have native vegetation. Turkey Creek Sanctuary in Palm Bay has good canoeing, kayaking, and hiking. Erna Nixon is in West Melbourne near the Mall. It's 40 acres of pristine hiking trails and boardwalks in the middle of town. It's lovely that they saved it. Another nice park is Wickham Park which is 50 acres in the middle of a developed area. It has hiking and biking, and they even have dog parks, playgrounds, and swimming on two lakes.
