How many bees are in one box or hive?

When the queen is laying eggs, bee hives can have up to 65,000 bees.

Mine will run about 60,000 to 65,000 and that would be at the end of June. Right now, the queen has stopped laying eggs because she doesn't want all those hungry mouths around all winter long. They will dwindle down to may be 25,000 to 35,000. She will start laying brood in the middle to late February, building up on apex around July 1st.

She lays eggs continuously. She mates one time. Then she will lay eggs for at least six more years in the summer up to 1000 eggs a day.
