The Daytona International Speedway is about 10 miles away from Ormond Beach, which where they host the Daytona 500. The racing was actually born in Ormond Beach, when people began coming here to visit in

the early 1900's and two of the families were very involved in automobiles. They started racing on the beach and the first timed they raced with automobiles was here in Ormond Beach in 1903. We had a 100th anniversary celebration in 2003 and the family members from the first family that raced on the beach attended. When the racing became so popular they built the Daytona International Speedway. In fact Daytona International Speedway used to be on the beach. In the 40s, it became so popular it just couldn't be done on the beach any longer.

People can no longer race on the beach. There is a speed limit and the beaches are all controlled, but you can drive on the beach when the sand is right. We reenact the races every January. In January of 2006, we have 100 Stanley Steamers coming to Ormond Beach, because 1906 was the year they raced for the first time.
