Attractions at Delray Beach

We enjoy both city parks and county parks. We have everything from swim and tennis clubs to adult centers where they have lawn bowling and things like that. We have award-winning blue wave beaches with

handicap access. I have never actually seen the conveyance, but I understand that people in wheelchairs can literally roll right up to the surf. Delray is pretty flat and at sea level, so our trails are more for biking than hiking. One of the parks that I mentioned earlier was the Museum of Japanese Gardens. They have trails that go through many centuries of different types of traditional Japanese gardens. The Bonsai section is hundreds of years old. To me, it's just mind-boggling. We actually have a guided bike tour for the five historic sections of downtown. You can look at the historic landmarks, and since most of the cities here are connected with the cycle lanes, you can literally go from city to city by just following the bicycle lanes.

One of the great things about Delray is that we always recognize and preserve our cultural roots. It makes us different from many other cities. We have both the Old School Square Museum and Cultural Arts Museum downtown. The S.D. Spady Multi-Cultural Historical Museum is a beautiful museum in our African American Community. It's a fairly new museum featuring the African American blocks that were the epicenter of the early years of Delray's development. Their collection has been put together by community-donated artifacts. The street is beautiful with the pavers and the lamps. It's very quaint. One of the really nice things about downtown is that it links you to all of the other little sections of town. You can feel the diversity as you move from place to place.

If you are coming Delray, wear comfy shoes and plan on being spontaneous. One of the special things about Delray is that the Gulf Stream from the Atlantic literally juts in a little bit along our coastline. I don't know all the details, but something about that Gulf Stream makes our water more pure-looking and blue because of the force of the flow. With the gorgeous blue sea and any kind of natural life that goes through here, it's one of the # 1 natural resorts and something little bit more tranquil to stroll through. It's right next door to the American Orchid Society which is an international resource for orchid people from around the world. Because they are right next to each other, it makes a very nice destination of garden tours for a whole day. In between, there is gallery shopping, gallery viewing, lots of historic sights, and plenty of choices for dining.

If you like sports, golf and tennis are our mainstays, but we also have volleyball tournaments on the beach. We have healthy schedule of sporting events throughout the year. Most recently we hosted the Fed Cup and Davis Cup, which is an international draw of tennis players. We also have a baseball school that's not only for kids, but for adults who just want to live their dream of playing baseball with the big guys. The school is located in our municipal park. There are a few of our members who are in the business of renting vacation rentals. In fact, whenever I go on a familiarization tour for travel writers, one of things that we do is give them some free time to rent jet skis or go sail boarding or any of those kinds. They can rent bicycles or have spa treatments as well, so there are plenty activities.
