Would you recommend self-defense weapons?

Yes, I would, but only with the proper training. You can hand anybody a handgun, but it doesn’t mean he is going to know how to use it and it doesn’t mean he is not going to shoot himself or his friends by accident. I believe that if you are a law abiding citizen that you ought to be able to buy and carry a weapon once you have been trained on it, and once you know the legal ramifications; once you know that if a guy has taken an old lady’s purse down the road, there is no reason for you to shoot him. These are types of things that people have to be taught, because they see so much on Hollywood movies that there is a lot of misconception. A lot of way the stun guns function, in Hollywood, it is also a misconception. So, yes I believe that people should be allowed if #1, they are really able, #2 if they are trained to do so and #3, if they pass the test. A test shows that they have learned what they have been taught and that they just didn’t just sit in the classroom, and go through the motions. That goes for knives, self-defense weapons, or guns. Guns are typically sold for defensive purposes, not for offensive purposes for law abiding citizens. I have an attitude that you can own a gun, but if you want to carry it, I believe you need some very thorough training.

Good article, however I have a problem with training. Whereas I do agree with training, I am certified as an weapons instructor, I do not place that as a requirement to purchase a gun. Why, because we let people buy cars and have no testing requirements and cars kill a lot more than guns. And, we don't have a testing program for alcohol and God only knows we really need something in this area. And besides cars, alcohol kills more than guns. So, if we want to test for owning a gun then lets test for cars and alcohol. While we're at it what about testing to become parents, as we all have stories about bad parents. I could list more but you hopefully get my point. I want to close by saying I DO agree with training, heck I'd make more money, but I cannot mandate and nor should anyone else. Especially the Government.

Well said article. I am one of those in the process of being properly trained at this time with handguns. Been around rifles all my life but handguns are a different breed. Get the training, enjoy the hobby.
