What does a flying dream mean?

Dream expert Layne Dalfen discusses the different meanings of flying dreams.

Jung focused on similar images that all of us have and flying is one of them. It's a very common dream but you want to attach the image of the flying to what's going on in your life this week. Some people are flying because they are flying away from something. Some people are flying because they are flying toward something. I have a client whose husband and daughter are in the Philippines and she was dreaming about flying and she is dreaming about flying because she wants to fly to them, she wants to see them.

I have another client, a man, who is always avoiding stuff so he dreams about flying when he is trying to get away from something that he is not dealing with. I know someone else who had a flying dream just last week because they finished writing their thesis and the flying was because of completing such an incredible accomplishment. You will get someone else who is dreaming that they are flying and all of a sudden it turns into a falling dream. This might be because they saw something good in a relationship and then all of a sudden the guy didn't call back.

For me there is no such thing as a nightmare or a bad dream. A nightmare is always a good thing. Nightmares are all good because either they are getting your attention like the piglet dream or they are preparatory. Dreams can be a rehearsal, a safe place to practice feelings. You get more used to the feeling and then you adapt better. I have a guy coming who kept having dreams where he wakes up feeling so sad and alone. He has been in a relationship for eight months and in the daytime he is trying to think that it's a good relationship but inside he knows that this is not a good relationship and his unconscious is beginning to prepare him for its ending. He is anticipating that she is going to break it off with him, because on some level all the signs are there, even though he doesn't want to look at it during the day. It's very important to note that we lie to ourselves constantly during the day. We lie and we deny constantly, it's a function of being human - but your unconscious never ever lies to you.

Dream analysis is definitely therapeutic, it isn't therapy, but it's very therapeutic.
