Yoga is a very ancient tradition that comes out of India. Mr. BKS Iyengar, is the man who took the practice of yoga and made it very practical and understandable for our modern age, while still keeping it true to the tradition of yoga. What he has done is brought yoga to the West. In fact, Time Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2004.
I want to explain him in the best way. Instead of just taking yoga and doing the postures, because it's written in the book, he really learned to understand what each posture does and what it can do if practiced in the traditional way. If they're modified, they can become a very therapeutic form of yoga, as well as a very wonderful form for everybody and anybody. Iyengar Yoga is one of the leading forms of yoga being researched through medical universities for it's therapeutic value.
Iyengar yoga is Hathayoga as taught to us today. Dr. BKS Iyengar is from Belour in South India, and now he has an institute where he teaches with his son and daughter in Pune, India just east of Bombay. He teaches people throughout the world through this institute, and after 10 years, he is coming back to the U.S. at the end of September 2005 for his book tour at the age of 86. The tour has been arranged through A Yoga Journal, which is a big yoga magazine in the U.S., and through the book Light on Life. He is the author of Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, and Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Light on Yoga is considered the bible of yoga by many modern-day yogis.
