surround sound receiver.

A nice surround sound receiver, if that is the kind of sound system you are looking for because there are still two-channel stereo systems available. But if you are looking for surround sound, you need a good surround sound receiver. If you are coming in with 1,000 dollars, you need that and a good set of bookshelf speakers. But to do that you probably want to come in with 1,500 dollars.
It's hard to put prices on there, because if this is just to give you an idea, if the system is upgraded every six months, the prices are going to be incorrect. The information that I am telling you is going to be incorrect.
Less expensive cables burst and then your upgrade will be purchasing better cables down the road.
