Carson City, which is the capital of Nevada, is 30 miles south of Reno and 15 miles east of Lake Tahoe in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. The population is around 55,000. We are completely different

from gaming cities like Las Vegas and Reno. We're known for our history, our beautiful weather, and our beautiful scenery.

Abe Curry was the founder of Carson City. He was quite a visionary and knew that this area would be a crossroads for all the pioneers headed west during the Gold Rush. He first built his trading post, but then he immediately laid out the part of land where he believed the state capital would be. He built a hotel called the Warm Springs Hotel and convinced the territorial government to pick Carson City to be the capital city in exchange for that plot of land. He turned the Warm Spring Hotel into the prison it is today because he knew it was something a capital would need. He later built the capital building, the Dement building, and the Roundhouse for the railroad, but despite his forward thinking, he wasn't very good at planning his own financial future. When he passed away, he left his wife and children with virtually no money, so his wife had to open up a boarding school at their home to make ends meet. You can still see his tombstone here today.
